Специфической особенностью английского языка является возможность придавать побудительное значение некаузативным глаголам. В этих случаях третьим членом конструкции всегда служит предложный оборот. Для этого используются предлоги intoиout of.

She stared him into silence.

Она так посмотрела на него, что он замолчал.

They laughed him out ofthe room.

Они так смеялись над ним, что он убежал из комнаты.

Переведите следующие предложения, обращая особое внимание на передачу каузативных конструкций:

1. The need for pressure from trade unions to get such decisions taken is urgent.

ПЕРЕВОД ГЛПГОЛОВ В СТРАДАТЕЛЬНОМ ЗАЛОГЕ

Страдательный залог употребляется в русском языке значительно реже, чем в английском. Это объясняется, в частности, тем, что в русском языке в страдательном залоге употребляются только переходные глаголы, тогда как в английском языке формы страдательного залога могут иметь переходные глаголы (за исключением глаголов, выражающих постоянное состояние или отношение – to have, to lack, to resemble и т.д.) и непереходные глаголы, требующие предложного дополнения (to look at, to look through, to laugh at, to speak toи т.д.). Рассмотрим различные способы перевода глаголов в страдательном залоге на русский язык.

1. Перевод страдательным залогом или кратким страдательным причастием:

“The Moon and Sixpence” was written by Somerset Maugham.

«Луна и грош» (была) написана Сомерсетом Моэмом.

2. Перевод действительным залогом (чаще всего с обратным порядком слов, то есть с подлежащим в конце предложения):

“The Moon and Sixpence” was written by Somerset Maugham.

«Луну и грош» написал Сомерсет Моэм.

Перевод «Сомерсет Моэм написал «Луну и грош» был бы неверным, т.к. в нем смещен смысловой центр оригинала: важно сказать, кто написал «Луну и грош», а не что написал Сомерсет Моэм.

3. Перевод возвратными глаголами:

The construction of this plant is being funded by a foreign investor.

Строительство этого завода финансируется зарубежным инвестором.

4. Безличным предложением:

The construction of this plant is being funded by a foreign investor.

Строительство этого завода финансирует зарубежный инвестор.

It is said (reported, thought, believed, considered) that …

Говорят (сообщают, думают, считают, полагают), что …

Предлоги, стоящие после английских глаголов в страдательном залоге, при переводе ставятся перед словом, которое в английском предложении выполняет функцию подлежащего:

The doctor has been sent for.

За доктором послали.

This UN resolution is often referred to.

На эту резолюцию ООН часто ссылаются.

Ряд английских глаголов с предлогами переводится русскими глаголами, после которых предлог не употребляется:

Unfortunately, these issues were not touched on at the conference.

К сожалению, эти вопросы не были затронуты на конференции.

В число этих глаголов входят: to account for, to bring about, to comment on, to deal with, to listen to, to subject to.

В то же время некоторым английским переходным глаголам соответствуют русские глаголы с предлогом:

The meeting was followed by a concert.

За митингом последовал концерт.

К таким глаголам относятся: to address, to affect, to answer, to attack, to influence, to join, to refuse, to treat, to watch.

Переведите следующие предложения с глаголом в страдательном залоге:

1. New equipment has been recently bought for the sports center.

2. It was founded that the papers for the conference were printed double space instead of 1.5.

3. It is assumed that the participants will take care of their accommodation themselves.

4. The productivity issue has been given special emphasis to in the meeting.

5. It was suggested by the commission that the project should be worked out in the context of the new circumstances.

6. The construction of new houses in another place is being negotiated with district authorities.

7. Nobody has been refused a chance to put forward their ideas for discussion.

8. Making decisions is always preceded by a thorough analysis of the market situation.

9. They will be shown the draft plan upon their arrival.

10. Some new approaches to attracting foreign investments are dealt with in this paper.

11. The issues of foreign exchange policy are also touched on in the report prepared for the board meeting.

12. The higher inflation rate in the second quarter is accounted for by the Central Bank’s loan to the government for the needs of agriculture and housing construction.

13. The sooner the unification of exchange rates is completed, the more smoothly the companies will adapt to new market conditions.

14. Practically all the enterprises in Russia and the CIS countries were affected by the financial crisis of 1998.

15. Social issues will certainly be taken care of by the new management of the company.

16. It is reported that the conference will be preceded by a two-day meeting of the leaders of parties, blocks and movements.

17. The tone of the government became uncompromising when wages and salaries were dealt with.

18. The senator promised that in the case of his re-election poverty in the state would have been eliminated by the end of his term.

19. President Roosevelt told the American people that “more than one-third of the nation is ill-closed, ill-housed, and ill-fed”.

20. English legal proceedings were carried on in the French language until the late fourteenth century.

ПЕРЕВОД ФОРМ СОСЛАГАТЕЛЬНОГО НАКЛОНЕНИЯ

При переводе сослагательного наклонения на русский язык возникают следующие трудности.

1. Форма should (для всех лиц) в сочетании с инфинитивом в именных придаточных предложениях с глаголом-сказуемым (it) is required that,в придаточных дополнительных предложениях после глаголов to recommend, to suggest, to demand, to insist, to decide, to propose, to arrange, to order и т.п., а также в придаточных предикативных предложениях, если подлежащим главного предложения является существительное того же корня: recommendation, suggestion, orderи т.п., переводится на русский язык сослагательным наклонением – с помощью частицы бы и глагола в прошедшем времени. Например:

The best thing the city council can do is to recommend that the Committee should begin again with renewed energy.

Самое лучшее, что может сделать городской совет – это вынести рекомендацию, чтобыКомитет с новой энергией приступилк работе.

В английском языке в таких предложениях часто опускается форма should.

The Secretary of State suggestedthat the troops be withdrawn from the country.

Госсекретарь предложил, чтобы войска были выведены из страны.

Придаточные дополнительные после глагола wish переводятся жаль, что; хорошо бы; хотелось бы. Для выражения сожаления в отношении будущего действия в придаточных дополнительных предложениях употребляется модальный глагол could.

I wishWorld War II had never begun.

Хорошо бы Вторая мировая война никогда бы не начиналась.

I wishwe were at home now.

Жаль, чтомы не дома сейчас.

I wishI could finish this job on time.

Хотелось бы закончить эту работу вовремя.

2. Придаточные предложения условия с формой shouldв сочетании с инфинитивом переводятся на русский язык, начиная словами в случае если бы. В английском языке такие предложения часто бывают инвертированными, с опущенным союзом. Например:

Should the Prime Minister stop inflation and economic recession,he could be the main nominee for the presidency.

В случае если бы премьер министр остановил инфляцию и спад экономики, он мог бы стать основным кандидатом в президенты страны.

3. Форма wereв сочетании с инфинитивом употребляется в придаточных предложениях условия для обозначения маловероятного условия, относящегося к будущему времени. Переводится на русский язык глаголом в сослагательном наклонении. Сложность перевода условных предложений разных типов на русский язык заключается в отсутствии грамматических форм выражения маловероятного, но реального действия, относящегося к настоящему времени и невозможного действия, относящегося к прошлому. Соответственно на русский язык они передаются лексически, с помощью таких слов как если, вдруг, почему-нибудь, паче чаяния, уже. Например:

Such a system is bound to be unpopular among most Europeans, and if the Federal party were to support it, they would undoubtedly weaken their chances in the forthcoming federal elections.

Такая система наверняка не будет пользоваться популярностью среди большинства европейцев, и если Федеральная партия вдруг стала бы ее поддерживать, она, несомненно, уменьшила бы свои шансы на победу на предстоящих выборах.

4. Форма wouldв сочетании с инфинитивом, если она употреблена в простом предложении, переводится на русский язык глаголом в сослагательном наклонении. Например:

There would be no life without water.

Без воды не было бы жизни.

Однако следует иметь в виду, что для передачи еще не принятого предложения или плана, в русском языке используется форма будущего времени изъявительного наклонения. Например:

It was recommended that a special report should be submitted. This report would give a detailed account of the activities of the committee and their views on the situation.

Рекомендуется представить специальный доклад. В этом докладе будет сделан подробный отчет о деятельности этой комиссии и представлена ее точка зрения по этому вопросу.

5. Трудность при переводе представляют также бессоюзные условные предложения с частичной или полной инверсией:

Had the problem been solved, the course of events might have been quite different.

Если бы проблема была решена, ход событий был бы иной.

Часто не учитывается стилистическая окраска, литературный стиль инвертированного предложения, и предложение переводится также с бессоюзным подчинением, что в русском языке характерно для разговорного стиля. Например:

Had it been as easy as that, no special negotiations would have been necessary.

Если бы это было так просто, не понадобилось бы никаких специальных переговоров (литературный стиль). (Будь это так просто … - разговорный стиль).

6. Условие может быть выражено не только полным придаточным предложением, но и другими способами, например, союзом ifв сочетании с причастием, предлогами given, providedс существительным, или составным предлогом but forв сочетании с существительным.

But for their hard and intensive trainings, they would never have won the cup.

Если бы не их напряженные и интенсивные тренировки, они так и не завоевали бы кубок.

Переведите следующие предложения, в которых содержатся формы английского сослагательного наклонения:

1. If there were only one exchange rate, it would be easier to perform all

export-import transactions.

2. This would most probably result in another recession.

3. If he were to make this decision, he would not hesitate.

4. If they hadn’t been warned, nobody would have had any objections.

5. Unless a technical assistance had been provided, they wouldn’t have been able to make this report based on updated methodology.

6. If it hadn’t been for their help, I wouldn’t have been able to arrive on time.

7. Should the work be finished sooner than planned, there would be always someone to pay you right away.

8. The situation would have worsened had it not been for the timely assistance.

9. Had the news reached us earlier, we would have given a proper response.

10. It would be a disaster to try to reverse economic integration in the middle of the road toward one world.

11. If the cost of goods were not comparatively low, it would not be possible to experiment and see whether the tastes were adaptable to the new environment.

12. The advice of international experts was that the government invests heavily in high tech industries.

13. If Franklin D. Roosevelt had not pushed the United States into the New Deal, the nation would still be suffering the Great Depression.

14. If there had been no natural or artificial barriers to trade in goods or services, the relative prices of all goods and services would have been equalized everywhere.

15. The last thing the government of this country can do to improve its economic situation is to recommend that the parliament should authorize a war against the peaceful neighbor-states.

ПЕРЕВОД ЭМФАТИЧЕСКИХ КОНСТРУКЦИЙ

Эмфатические конструкции придают высказыванию сильную эмоциональную окрашенность. Эмфаза создается как грамматическими, так и лексическими средствами или теми и другими вместе. Для создания эмфазы используются усилительные слова и словосочетания, инверсия, двойное отрицание.

Самым широко употребляемым средством создания эмфазы является инверсия, т.е. обратный порядок слов в предложении. Обратный порядок слов употребляется, в частности, после ряда наречий и союзов:

hardly … when едва … как (не успел … как)

no sooner … than едва … как (не успел … как)

not only … but не только … но и

only только

never никогда

nowhere нигде

neither и не; а также не

nor и не; а также не

so а также; и

Hardly he opened the door when a bright beam of light blinded him.

Не успел он открыть дверь, как яркий луч света ослепил его.

Для передачи эмфазы, выраженной инверсией, на русский язык порой необходимо использовать лексические средства, например, ввести усилительные или более экспрессивные слова, т.к. использование инверсии в переводе не далеко всегда делает его адекватным.

Seldom was he at a loss for words.

Крайне редко случалось так, чтобы он не находил, что сказать.

Эмфаза создается также при помощи усилительных слов и словосочетаний: as much as; as early as; do; It is … that (who, which).

The inflation rate reached as much as 25 percent at that time.

Уровень инфляции в то время поднялся на целых 25 процентов.

It was Richard Burton who starred in the film.

Именно Ричард Бертон снялся в главной роли в этом фильме.

В английском языке также распространено выражение эмфазы при помощи двойного отрицания, состоящего из отрицательной частицы not и прилагательного, наречия или союза с отрицательным префиксом. Эти два отрицания взаимно исключают друг друга, и все высказывание является утверждением, в котором присутствует также элемент эмфазы.

It is not uncommon to use the Internet for communication purposes now.

Сейчас вполне обычным является использование интернета для связи.

It is not an unfavourable moment to start the talks with the opposition.
