Out of patience with his son, Sheridan threatened him: “If you don’t immediately obey me, I shall cut you off with a shilling.” “When you really make me up your mind to cut me off with a shilling,” said the youth, “you will have to borrow it first, sir.”

The Rooster

By Hilder I. Roston

What would we do,

I’d like to know,

Without that bird

That loves to crow?

Who wakes him up,

I’d like to know,

To tell him when

It’s time to crow.

I’ll get up early

One day, too,

And shout out:

“Cock-a-doodle-doo-oo.”

The Queen’s Rhyme
