Послесловие

Профессор А. Р. Лурия был так добр, что согласился взять на себя труд редактирования этого перевода, сделанного моими друзьями Н. Й. Даниловой и Е. Д. Хомской. Он обратился ко мне с просьбой написать послесловие для русского издания «Языков мозга». Делая это, я хочу обратить внимание читателя на некоторые факты, установленные в экспериментальных и теоретических исследованиях за последние годы, и служащие объяснением парадоксов и принципов нейропсихологии, которые изложены в этой книге.

  1. За последние годы полностью подтвердился тот факт, что сетчатка до уровня слоя ганглиозных клеток обрабатывает входящие воздействия исключительно посредством медленных потенциалов. Это заставило обратить внимание на важность механизма взаимодействия медленных потенциалов для вычислительных операций, выполняемых нервной тканью. Следовательно, двухпроцессный механизм, характеризующий деятельность нервной системы, подробно рассмотренный в главе I, теперь имеет под собой даже более твердую почву, чем тогда, когда он был предложен.
  2. Работа Ф. Кемпбелла из Кембриджского университета и — многих его сотрудников и совсем недавно работа В. Д. Глезера, В. А. Иванова и Т. А. Щербака из Института физиологии; имени И. П. Павлова в Ленинграде продолжили линию доказательства того факта, что зрительная система обрабатывает пространственные структуры сигналов посредством процессов, имеющих характер пространственно-организованных динамических структур (например, используя дискретное пространственное преобразование Фурье) точно так же, как слуховая система обрабатывает звуки путем организации частотных колебаний во времени. По-видимому, механизмы, обрабатывающие пространственную частоту, близки к механизмам голограмм. Таким образом, голограмма, которая вначале была использована как метафора ели аналогия для объяснения некоторых сторон нарушений деятельности нервной системы, стала точной моделью нормальных форм ее работы. Это справедливо по крайней мере для зрения.
  3. Есть и другие факты, которые вызвали появление новой концепции двухпроцессного механизма работы мозга; эта концепция получила название «голографической теории». Эта теория имеет дело с законами, уточняющими отношения между элементами или системами, образующими некоторую организацию. Уровень взаимодействия таких элементов или систем описывается степенями свободы, которые характеризуют, данную организацию. Чем больше степеней свободы, тем более организованной является структура. Однако, когда число возможных отношений становится максимальным, элементы, входящие в систему, могут перекрываться. Это и есть голографическое состояние, которое, по-видимому, характеризуется случайным распределением избыточных элементов, входящих в структуру. Однако видимость бессистемности обманчива, потому что существуют правила трансформации, которые превращают голографическую сферу в структурированную. Преобразования Фурье и другие сходные с ними преобразования описывают случаи, в которых быстро достигается полная обратимость. Однако частные преобразования, такие, как используемые в топологии, предлагают промежуточный тип организации, который часто наблюдается в биологических системах.
  4. Организация действия была широко изучена в этих понятиях. Первоначальные наблюдения Н. А. Бернштейна показали, что повторяющиеся действия могут быть описаны на языке рядов Фурье. Йохансон из университета в Упсале повторил и продолжил эксперименты Н. А. Бернштейна и показал, что такое сложное действие, как танцы, можно разложить на компоненты в соответствии с частотным анализом Фурье, и что детали, которые придают специфику таким действиям, зависят от числа компонентов, используемых для построения (реконструкции) самого действия. В этих исследованиях каждый компонент понимается как вектор в топологическом пространстве.
  5. Сходным образом рассматривается в работах Тома (Thorn) и проблема семантики и синтаксиса. Синтаксис и грамматика понимаются как условные векторы в топологическом семантическом пространстве. Такие пространственные семантические элементы и системы должны быть представлены голографически. Книга «Языки мозга» содержит данные, которые позволяют рассматривать знаки, символы и синтаксические структуры как ступеньки в организации такого «пространства».
  6. Наблюдения, указывающие на то, что мозг и особенно зрительная система организованы как по голографическому, так и по структурному принципу, вновь выдвигают проблему изоморфизма в отношении между физическим миром и восприятием. Эта проблема возникает потому, что функция зрительной системы в значительной мере организована голографически. На это указывает возможность преобразований сетчаточных образов, сохраняющих свою константность. Однако сетчаточный образ строится с помощью оптической системы глаза на основе тех же самых преобразований. Поэтому не исключено, что оптические системы глаза конструируют образ, отбирая специальные явления из объективной картины мира. Возможно, что все сказанное позволит нам глубже проникнуть и в закономерности других явлений, наблюдаемых при изучении внешнего мира. Д. Бом из Лондонского университета недавно тщательно проанализировал современные парадоксы и проблемы, связанные с теорией относительности и квантовой физикой. Он высказал мысль, что эти противоречия возникли от того, что наши представления об организации наблюдаемых явлений в значительной мере зависят от тех аппаратов, с помощью которых осуществляется наше восприятие. Парадоксы возникли тогда, когда стала применяться такая аппаратура, как интерферометры (анализаторы пространственной частоты). Следовательно, можно думать, что голография и является концепцией, которая поможет существенно углубить наши знания. Таким образом, ученые приходят к мысли о том, что внешний мир построен по голографическому и структурному принципам, подобно тому, как мы пришли в этой книге к выводу о голографической и структурной организации нервной системы… Следовательно, Кёлер был прав, предполагая, что между моэгой и другими физическими устройствами существует известный изоморфизм. Однако он еще не был в состоянии раскрыть те законы, которые дают возможность как психологу, так и физику обеспечить описание единой структуры мира.
  7. Как отмечалось в эпилоге, путешествие, описанное в книге, еще не закончено. Я верю, что рубеж, который мы называем проблемой сознание — мозг — поведение, будет перейден и перед нами предстанет новая удивительная картина мира. Я напоминаю моим коллегам, как много они должны сделать, чтобы продолжить этот путь и указать его направление. Я не нахожу слов, чтобы описать радость, которую принесло наше сотрудничество, и хочу еще раз выразить моим советским коллегам свою глубокую благодарность.
