КОСВЕННАЯ РЕЧЬ. INDIRECT SPEECH

I. COMMANDS AND REQUESTS. КОМАНДЫ И ПРОСЬБЫ

(ПРЕДЛОЖЕНИЯ ПОВЕЛИТЕЛЬНОГО НАКЛОНЕНИЯ)

Это односоставные предложения; начинаются с глагола повелительного наклонения:

Keep rivers and lakes clean and the air fresh!”

Отрицательные предложения образуются путем добавления отрицания – don’t: “Don’t turn the planet into a pile of rubbish!”

 

1. Приказания и просьбы в косвенной речи вводятся глаголами to tell (велеть,

сказать, приказывать), to ask (просить);

2. Затем следует указание на лицо, к которому обращены приказание или просьба

(Mother told the children… Nick asked his friend...);

3. Глагол повелительного наклонения заменяется в косвенной речи инфинитивом с

частицей to, а в отрицательном предложении – not to.

4. По смыслу меняются личные и притяжательные местоимения!

5. Нарицательные существительные, которые указаны в словах автора

приобретают артикль the.

CHANGE INTO INDIRECT SPEECH:

e.g. 1)Nick: “Mary, help me to do the sums, please!” –

a)Nick asks Mary to helphim to dothe sums.

b) Nick asked Mary to help him to do the sums.

2)Teacher: “Bob, don’t beso noisy!” –

a) The teacher tells Bob not to beso noisy.

b) Theteacher told Bob not to beso noisy.

Father: “Helen, clean your room, please!” “Nick, fold up your things in the right place, please”. “Don’t play in the street!”   “Ann, wash the dishes, please”. “Tom, don’t be so noisy”. “Mum, pass me the sugar, please”. “Please, don’t leave the door open, son!” “Children, wash your hands before you begin to read”. “Pupils, don’t tear the pages in your books”. “Keep your mouth closed when you eat, Nick”. “Girls, cross the street at the crossing-place”. “Cross the street in front of a tram, brother”. “Mary, find us a story to make into a play, please!” “Please, bring the things that are needed on the stage”.   “Please, don’t forget to buy me a newspaper, “Please, don’t forget to buy me a newspaper, Tom!”

II. STATEMENTS. ПОВЕСТВОВАТЕЛЬНЫЕ ПРЕДЛОЖЕНИЯ


Это двусоставные предложения с прямым порядком слов; утвердительные или отрицательные; в любом времени действительного или страдательного залога:

E.g. Helen: “I like to help my mother about the house.”

Coach: “Unfortunately we didn’t win the game yesterday:”

Teacher: “The dictation will be written on Monday.”

При переводе чьих-либо утверждений в косвенную речь происходят

следующие изменения:

1. Образуется сложное предложение;

2. Слова автора образуют главное предложение и вводятся глаголами say, tell;

3. Прямая речь образует придаточное изъяснительное предложение и

присоединяется к главному союзом that;

4. Если глагол главного предложения стоит в прошедшем времени, то в

придаточном предложении следует применить правило согласования времен;

5. По смыслу меняются личные и притяжательные местоимения.

6. Нарицательные существительные, которые указаны в словах автора

приобретают артикль the.

CHANGE INTO INDIRECT SPEECH:

e.g. 1) Alice: “I had a wonderful time last summer.”

a) Alice says (that) she had a wonderful time in summer.

b) Alice said (that) she had hada wonderful time in summer.

2) Peter: “Father has bought a new TV-set.”

a) Peter tells his friend (that) his father has just bought a new TV-set.

b) Peter told his friend (that) his father had just bought a new TV-set.

 

1. Lena: “I can ski and skate very well”.

2. Father: “I shall go on a trip next week”.

3. Helen: “My mother always cooks a holiday cake on a New Year’s Day”.

4. Nick: “The audience enjoyed the performance”.

5. Olga: “My classmates made the wonderful scenery for the performance”.

6. Pete: “I am fond of historical films”.

7. Ann: “My favourite TV programme is “What? Where? When?”

8. Mother: “The boys have gone to the cinema”.

9. Teacher: “Look! Nick is riding a bicycle in the yard”.

10. Father: “I hope you will win the competition”.

(to his son)

11. Pupils: “We take part in different contests at school”.

III. GENERAL AND ALTERNATIVE QUESTIONS.

ОБЩИЕ И АЛЬТЕРНАТИВНЫЕ ВОПРОСЫ.

Вопросы с обратным порядком слов, так как начинаются с различных вспомогательных глаголов в зависимости от времени e.g. 1. Mother: “Are you watching TV, Pam?”

2. Sally: “Will you buy me a new dress, Mum?”

При передаче общих или альтернативных вопросов в косвенной речи происходят следующие изменения:

1. Образуется сложное предложение;

2. Слова автора образуют главное предложение и вводятся глаголами ask, wonder, want to know, be interested;

3. Прямая речь образует придаточное изъяснительное с прямым порядком слов (подлежащее + сказуемое) и присоединяется к главному союзом ifили whether;

4. Если глагол главного предложения стоит в прошедшем времени, то в придаточном предложении следует применить правило согласования времен;

6. По смыслу меняются личные и притяжательные местоимения.

7. Нарицательные существительные, которые указаны в словах автора

приобретают артикль the.

Change into Indirect Speech:

e.g. 1) Teacher: “Do you often go swimming, Sam?”

2) Nick: “Have you found a tortoise or a hedgehog in the forest?”

a) Nick wants to know if I have found a tortoise or a hedgehog.

b) Nick wanted to know if I had found a tortoise or a hedgehog.

3) Mary: “Did you visit your granny in summer, Nick?”

a) Mary asks Nick whether he visited his granny in summer.

b) Mary asked Nick whether he had visited his granny in summer.

 

1. Peter: "Alice, are you busy now?"

2. Polly: "Have you a brother or a sister?"

3. Nick: "Are you writing a letter to your pen-friend, Ann?"

4. Jane: "Kate, do you know Tom's address?"

5. Mother: "Have you taken milk bottles back to the shop, Tom?"

6. Sam: "Did you travel in summer, Sally?"

7. Teacher: "Olga, can you swim?"

8. Tony: "Is there anything for me to do, Mum?"

9. Nick: "Pete, can I speak to Jane?"

10. Father: "Mary, did the audience applaud to the actors?"

11. Sam: "Nick, have you ever acted in a play?"

12. Polly: "Did you have stage fright, Nick?"

13. Sally: "Paul, were the actors excited?"

14. Teacher: "Can you express your opinion, Nick?"

15. Tom: "Will you make programs for guests, boys?"

16. Girls: "Have you decided on a date for a performance, boys?"

17. Tony: "Ann, are there special theatres for children in your town?”

IV. SPECIAL QUESTIONS. СПЕЦИАЛЬНЫЕ ВОПРОСЫ.

 

Эти вопросы начинаются с различных вопросительных местоимений (what, when, why, how, who, where, etc.), имеют обратный порядок слов, кроме вопросов к подлежащему:

e.g. 1) Teacher: “What books did you read in summer, children?”

2) Librarian: “What are you reading?”

3) Tom: “When do you usually go to the swimming-pool?”

4) Mother: “Who can speak English best in your group, Will?”

(вопрос к подлежащему)

При передаче специальных вопросов в косвенной речи происходят следующие изменения:

1. Образуется сложное предложение;

2. Слова автора образуют главное предложение и вводятся глаголами ask, wonder, want to know, be interested;

3. Прямая речь образует придаточное изъяснительное с прямым порядком слов (подлежащее + сказуемое) и присоединяется к главному теми же вопросительными словами, с которых начинался вопрос в прямой речи;

4. Если глагол главного предложения стоит в прошедшем времени, то в придаточном предложении следует применить правило согласования времен;

5. По смыслу меняются личные и притяжательные местоимения.

6. Нарицательные существительные, которые указаны в словах автора

приобретают артикль the.

a) The librarian wonders what we are reading.

b) The librarian wondered what we were reading.

3) Tom: “When do you usually go to the swimming-pool?”

a) Tom wants to know when I usually go to the swimming-pool.

b) Tom wanted to know when I usually went to the swimming-pool.

4) Mother: “Who can speak English best in your group, Will?”

a) Mother asks Will who can speak English best in his group.

b) Mother asked Will who could speak English best in his group.

1. Teacher: "Tom, where did you travel in August?"

2. Father: "Nick, when did you finish your work?"

3. Shop-assistant (to a man): "What colour jeans do you want?
What size sweater do you wear?"

4. Mother: "What are you writing, Mary?"

5. Nick: "How many books have you bought, Dad?"

6. Ann: "Who is your favourite writer, Nick?"

7. Sam: "What are your favourite subjects, Helen?"

8. Teacher: "Nick, who helped you to draw the picture?"

9. Mary: "Mum, what have you cooked for dinner?"

 

10. Sally: "Why are you so late, Ann?"

11. Tom: "When can you explain to me a new rule, Mary?"

12. Mother: "Helen, when will you go on a hike?"

13. Father: "Nick, what marks did you get today?"

14. Helen: "What song will you sing at the concert, girls?"

15. Teacher: "Helen, why did you choose this play?"

16. Mr. Smith: "What are you going to do at the weekend, Ann?"

17. Grandmother: "What was the weather like yesterday?"
