Dear Mrs. Howard

It’s now a week since we left London. This place is just wonderful. I’m glad that we came here. I think the countryside is the most beautiful place to spend summer holidays and it’s good to have a different kind of holiday every summer.

The cottage we are renting is quite comfortable. There’s a river not far from the house and it is good for swimming. Mr. Parker and the boys are fond of swimming. I spend all my time on the bank of the river lying in the sun, but I do not like to swim, as I’m not good at it. You know I like to meet people and make friends with other holiday-makers. It’s a pity there aren’t many holiday-makers here. The place is quiet. Mr. Parker dislikes the idea of having a holiday with hundreds of other people. He always gets away from people when he is on holiday. The other day he got acquainted with Dr. Sandford who is staying with his relatives here. They have bought fishing-rods and sometimes early in the morning they go fishing. They are constantly talking about fishing, though they do not catch much fish. They like early mornings, but I don’t. I like to sleep in the morning. I enjoy the evenings when it’s neither hot nor cool, and everything looks beautiful when the sun is setting.

Now Mr. Parker is working in the garden. You know he likes to work in the garden and so he enjoys being in the country. He is having a rest from his work.

Robert and Peter are having a nice time, too. You should see them, they are quite brown. When it’s not hot enough to swim, they enjoy playing football with other boys, and perhaps that’s how Robert avoids helping me about the house. He eats enormous meals and doesn’t worry about anything. But Peter helps me by sweeping and cleaning the rooms and washing up after meals. It’s a pity that our holiday is coming to an end. We’re leaving for London next Friday.

What are you doing in town? I haven’t any idea how you amuse yourself, but I hope that you are as happy as I am. I’m looking forward to seeing you and having a good chat with you.

Sincerely yours,

Nora Parker

Exercise 3.

Holidays are always something to get excited about.

(a) Listen to the dialogue, then read it.

Holiday Plans

Mary Have you had your holiday for this year yet, Jane?
Jane Not yet. I’m taking it at the end of September.
Mary Where are you going? Have you made up your mind?
Jane Not really. I thought of going to Spain again, but I’ve already been there twice and I’d like to try somewhere new.
Mary My brother’s just gone to Mexico for two weeks. I had a card from him yesterday and he seems to be having a good time. Why don’t you go there?
Jane That’s O.K. for you well-off people, but I couldn’t possibly afford it. I’m much too hard up at the moment.
Mary The air-fare is quite expensive, I admit, but you needn’t spend a lot when you get there.
Jane I’ve already spent a lot of money this year. My flat was done up last month, so I haven’t got much to spare for expensive holidays abroad.
Mary Oh, I see.
Jane Perhaps, I’ll just go to Scotland or Ireland in the end. I’ve heard they’re both very beautiful, and I haven’t been to either of them.
Mary We went to Ireland two years ago to pay Jill and her husband a visit. They’re in Dublin now.
Jane Oh, yes, so they are!
Mary If you decide on Ireland you can call in on them. Jill would willingly put you up for a few days, I’m sure.
Jane That’s a good idea! I haven’t seen Jill for more than three years now and I’d like to know how she’s getting on.

(b) Using the active vocabulary of the dialogue speak about Jane as if you were Mary. Give plenty of details.

(c) Speak as Jane
