P1 Adjective is a word, expressing quality. T For example? Ps Shy, bright, light... T You are right. And what is adverb? P2 Adverb is a word, expressing a feature of an action or a feature of a quality. T Examples... P3 Slowly, well, badly... T Yes. Thank you. Now I shall read you some sentences. Pay attention to adjectives and adverbs in these sentences. 1. His walk was quick and he came to school in time. 2. He walked quickly and he came to school in time. 3. His answer was slow and clear. 4. He answered slowly and clearly. 5. The children’s talk was very loud. 6. The children talked loudly. T Now look at the blackboard. I shall read you these sentences again. Pay attention to the endings of adjectives and adverbs. (Teacher reads...) T Please, find me the adjective in the first sentence. Ps Quick. (Teacher writes adjectives and adverbs in two columns). T Read me the adverb from the second sentence. Ps Quickly. T Find the adjectives in the third and fifth sentences. Ps Slow, clear, loud. T And adverbs from the fourth and sixth sentences. Ps Slowly, clearly, loudly. T Right you are. If we compare these adjectives and adverbs, what can we find? Ps All the adverbs have the same ending –ly. T You are right. So, what conclusion can we make? P4 That we can form adverbs from adjectives. T Yes. We can draw a small scheme. ADJECTIVE + LY = ADVERB If we want to form an adverb, we add an ending –ly to an adjective. There are some spelling rules, which we should know in order to write the adverbs correctly. Look at these words, what you can see? Gentle – gently Irritable – irritably Reliable – reliably Rule: if an adjective ends in le, drop e and add ly. False – falsely Polite – politely Rule: if an adjective ends in e, we add ly. But: whole – wholly, true – truly. Sleepy – sleepily Happy – happily Weary – wearily Rule: if an adjective ends in consonant + y, this y changes into i. Tragic – tragically Dramatic – dramatically Rule: if an adjective ends in –ic-, add ending -ally. T Now let’s read these words: quickly, slowly, clearly, loudly, gently, irritably, reliably, falsely, politely, falsely, wholly, truly, sleepily, happily, wearily, tragically, dramatically.   T Did you see the cartoon “Tom and Jerry”? Ps Yes. T Who are the main heroes? Ps Cat Tom and mouse Jerry. T I shall read you some sentences about Tom and Jerry. Agree with me if I am right. Say: “You are right” before the statement or “You are not right” if the statement is false. Do not repeat false statement. 1. Jerry runs quickly. 2. Tom runs slowly. 3. Tom and Jerry do not live peacefully. 4. Tom behaves badly. 5. Tom cries loudly. 6. Jerry beats Tom strongly. 7. Tom behaves in a friendly way. 8. The Dog catches up the cat easily. The following words end in -ly, but they are adjectives: elderly, friendly, likely, deadly, lovely, silly, ugly, lively etc. They form their adverbs with in a(n)...way/manner, for example, in a friendly way. T Look through the window. I shall tell you what I see there, and you will continue my thought. You can use the words on the blackboard. I say: The sun is shining brightly. Wind – blow – slowly Trees – wave – slightly Birds – sing – beautifully A boy – run – quickly An old man – go – slowly A woman – speak – loudly T Read these sentences. Finish them by forming adverbs from adjectives. Example: My sister cooks (bad) – My sister cooks badly. 1. The snow is falling (slow). 2. The girl cries (loud). 3. He answered all the questions (easy). 4. She spoke (angry). 5. The new boy behaved (friendly). 6. He wrote his dictation (bad). 7. They travelled (comfortable). 8. The hero acted (brave). 9. She received him (cold). 10. He is (dangerous) ill. 11. The two sisters were dressed (different). Answer my questions. Give full answers. 1) How do you run at your physical training lessons? 2) How do you cook? 3) How do you sing? 4) How will you treat your new neighbour? 5) Did you write your last control-work badly? 6) You go to school regularly, don’t you? 7) Marina usually behaves calmly/quietly at the lessons, does not she? 8) Does Oleg behave quietly or loudly? 9) Does Kristina answer the questions easily? Your friend from Spain wrote you a letter. He learns English too. But, unfortunately, he has not learned how to form adverbs from adjectives, and he made some mistakes in his letter. Read the part of his letter and correct his mistakes. Dear Dmytro, Thank you very much for your letter. I was very glad to receive it. You asked me what I like to do in my free time. I shall answer you. I like to play football with my friends. I like this game very much, but I play it bad. I also regular go to the swimming-pool, because I want to learn to swim. I also like to help my mother about the house. I do it very quick, I even help her with cooking, but, unfortunately, I cook bad. T Your new friend tells you what he can do. Say that you can do the same or that you cannot do that. E.g. I read English texts quickly. I read English texts quickly too. I do not read English texts quickly. 1. I swim badly. 2. I write dictations badly. 3. I go to school regularly. 4. I always behave seriously. 5. I never answer angrily. 6. I go to the theatre regularly. 7. I run slowly. 8. I acquaint with people easily. 9. I always behave in a friendly way. Martin is an English schoolboy. He came to Ukraine for a week. You have got acquainted with him. He wants to know more about you. Answer his questions. Work in pairs. P1 (Martin) will put questions, P2 will answer them. In your questions use as many adverbs with the ending ly as possible. E.g. P1 Do you go to the swimming-pool regularly? P2 Yes, I do. I go to the swimming-pool regularly. P1 Do you swim well? P2 Unfortunately I swim badly.
